Rainbow Wedding Cake!

Bridal Colour, Ice The Cake, Worton Park, May 12

My sister, Michelle, is a lot younger than I am, and I didn’t get to know her as an adult until I returned home after living out of state for a few years. When we reconnected over dinner, the first thing she said to me was, “I’ve slept with women.”

“So you’re gay?” I asked.

“No, I just like people – all people.”

She wasn’t yet comfortable enough with her sexuality to call herself gay, but over the years she came to embrace this aspect of herself. The more she came out, however; the more discrimination she experienced. I listened as she vented about this. I also listened as she dealt with heartbreak over various partners.

Then one day, Michelle told me about Linda. I’d never seen her so excited about anyone she’d dated before. When I met Linda, I loved her too and I knew that she and my sis had something special. As I predicted, their love grew and a few weeks ago they got married.

It was a lovely ceremony that included a cake that had a secret. It looked like a regular white cake, but when Michelle and Linda cut it, it revealed layer after layer of vibrant colors. It was a rainbow cake in honor of the freedom that allowed Michelle and Linda to get married.

Despite the fact that it wasn’t vegan, I loved what the cake represented. When my sister asked if I was going to eat a piece, however; I had to think about it. Should I eat a piece and support my sis and gay rights? Or should I abstain and support my belief in animal rights?

I decided to abstain. I couldn’t justify disrespecting animals for any reason. At the wedding, however; I caved and ate a piece (and a half) of cake. I wish I could say that at least I’d done this for my sis and gay rights, but really I just did it because I wanted a piece of cake. To err is human.

Please note that the cake photo above is not from my sister’s wedding, it’s a professional photo courtesy of Sweetness & Delight. Here are some actual photos from my sister’s wedding.
